A new consultation has been launched by government covering proposals to install smart meters in all homes and small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) by 2020.
Smart meters are designed to provide energy companies and consumers with accurate data on how much electricity and gas they are using. Using smart meters eliminates the need for estimated bills and allows consumers to have more control over how much energy they are using and makes it easier for them to change supplier.
The new proposals would affect over 26 million homes and several million businesses. It is estimated that installing smart meters in all SMEs would make carbon emission reductions of 73 million tonnes by 2020.
